Peking University, October 8, 2021: The 4th inaugural meeting of the National Climate Change Expert Committee was held at the China Meteorological Administration on September 23, 2021. Those present at the meeting included Xie Zhenhua, China’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, and Zhuang Guotai, director of the China Meteorological Administration. At the meeting, Zhuang Guotai announced the list of members of the committee and issued letters of appointment. Professor Zhang Haibin, Vice President of the School of International Studies, Peking University, was appointed as a member - this is also the first time that a scholar of international studies was selected into the committee.

The National Climate Change Expert Committee is an expert advisory body of the national leading group on climate change. It was established in 2006 under the approval of Hu Jintao, then general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, and Wen Jiabao, Premier of the State Council. Its office is located at the China Meteorological Administration. As a decision-making support institution and a national think tank, its main responsibility is to provide advice on issues related to climate change and China’s strategy and policies in this field. The 4th committee is composed of 38 members, including academicians and well-known experts in areas such as atmospheric science, oceanology, hydrology.

In the early 1990s, the School of International Studies, Peking University, was the first among universities in China to offer the course “environmental climate and international relations” and conducted relevant research. At present, courses on global Environment and Climate governance research are offered at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. In the past few decades, the School of International Studies has made great achievements in research and social services in this field and has significant international influences.
