China Medical Board
Global Health Leadership Development Program
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Over the past decade, China has played an increasingly prominent role in global health; and there is a growing need for global health practitioners who have strong practical field experience in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To address this gap, the China Medical Board (CMB) launched the CMB Global Health Leadership Development Program in 2021, which aimed to provide early-career Chinese global health professionals with mentored hands-on opportunities in capacity building and field experience in LMICs.
Collaborating with world-renowned institutions from North America, Europe, and China as program operating institutions, this CMB program brings together a network of outstanding LMIC training sites across different regions of the world that have the infrastructure, leadership, and mentoring experience to provide the highest quality global health training in research and practice for selected Chinese fellows.
CMB Global Health Leadership fellows will be selected through a rigorous selection process to undertake a one-year postdoctoral or postgraduate fellowship training. Under a tailored mentorship plan, the fellowship comprises up to three-months of orientation and training at an overseas program-operating institution, and a minimum of nine-months of hands-on fieldwork on a specific global health project at a host LMIC site.
The CMB provides funding for this program, which is administrated through the program operating institutions. Selected fellows will receive a living stipend and a project & training stipend, as well as coverage for international travel, visas and health insurance. They will take the fellowship under a co-mentorship model, which includes a mentor from the overseas program-operating institution, a LMIC site mentor as well as a mentor from China. Through the fellowship, they will accumulate rich field work experience in LMICs through hands-on participation in tailored global health projects, and under the supervision of distinguished global health experts from different regions. This will enable the fellows to develop excellent skills as well as professional networks, opportunities for collaboration, and friendships with global health experts for their long-term career development. Selected fellows will be supported by the China- based program-operating institution in their pre-departure preparations, including a week-long in-person training to prepare fellows to undertake the overseas fellowship. In addition, they will join CMB’s community of Global Health Leadership fellows for future engagement.
Applicants for the CMB Global Health Leadership Development Program must be Chinese nationals and considered as early- and mid-career health professionals (under the age of 45). They should demonstrate qualifications for this program based upon their professional interest as well as career development goals. Potential candidates include, but are not limited to, those from the following professional backgrounds:
• Faculty members in health-related departments of universities in China;
• Public health practitioners, researchers and program management professionals working in disease-control agencies and other research institutions in China;
• Officials working in health-related sectors in Chinese governmental agencies;
• Clinical practitioners working in healthcare institutions in China who have strong interest and passion for a career in global health;
• Doctoral students at universities in and outside China, who are in final year of their PhD or MD (or equivalent) degree programs in health-related majors;
• Scientific research professionals from the biopharmaceutical and other related enterprises with strong interest or needs of global health engagement.
English language proficiency is required for all applicants. Specific eligibility requirements and application procedure may vary among different overseas program-operating institutions. Detailed information can be found on individual institutions’ program websites.
CALL FOR APPLICANTS
FOR THE 2023 COHORT RECRUITMENT
The CMB has been collaborating with Yale School of Medicine (YSM) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) as the two overseas program-operating institutions since 2021. The inaugural round of the program received numerous recognitions and many high-quality applications. Seven outstanding candidates from universities, hospitals and public health agencies in China have been selected as 2022 CMB Global Health Leadership fellows. They will depart in September 2022 for short-term training in the United States or the United Kingdom and then conduct nine-month field projects in different LMIC sites in Nigeria, Gambia, Kenya, Philippines, Malaysia, and Brazil.
In July 2022, Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC) joined the CMB Global Health Leadership Development Program as the China-based program-operating institution. PKUHSC will leverage its resources and capacity in global health education, international collaboration, and project management to facilitate CMB, YSM and LSHTM with the program implementation, including organizing pre-departure training for selected fellows.
The CMB is pleased to announce the launch of the second round of the Global Health Leadership Development Program, for which fellowship recruitment starts in July 2022. It is anticipated that approximately four CMB Global Health Leadership fellows will be selected by each overseas program-operating institution. They will depart for the US or UK in late summer of 2023 to start their fellowship training.
Program Faculty & LMIC Sites
YSM and LSHTM have prepared a list of program faculty who will be the YSM/LSHTM mentors for selected fellows, as well as a list of over 12 host LMIC sites in Asia Pacific, Africa, and Latin America with on-site faculty members who will also join the co-mentor team. The program also encourages involvement of a mentor from Chinese institutions in the trainee’s fellowship activities. The co-mentor team will jointly guide trainees in project proposal and training plan design, provide hands-on mentorship and supervision during the implementation of trainee’s project, and offer assistance and support during the fellowship period. All LMIC mentors have extensive track records in collaborating with program operating institutions’ faculty and successfully co-mentoring students in global health fields.
Selected fellows will work with program faculty who are experts in a broad range of global health topics including, but not limited to, emerging infectious diseases, chronic disease, public health practice and capacity building, health policy and systems, community health, health services and management, maternal and child health, nursing, and health project management. Detailed descriptions regarding eligibility requirements, program faculty, LMIC sites, financial support arrangements and application procedure can be found on YSM Program Website and LSHTM Program Website.
Selection Process & Important Dates
The 2023 cohort recruitment of the Global Health Leadership Development will be conducted through a rigorous two-round selection process. The first-round selection is mainly to assess candidate’s eligibility, qualification, English proficiency and demonstrated potential as a future global health leader. Shortlisted candidates from the first round will proceed to the second-round selection conducted by YSM and LSHTM independently. YSM and LSHTM will first make assessment on the shortlisted candidates, and those pass the assessment will be invited to LMIC site introduction meetings and then follow the specific ‘trainee-mentor matching’ procedure designed by YSM and LSHTM. Through this process, a potential host site and co-mentor team will be identified from the list of pre-approved collaborating LMIC sites. With the guidance of the mentors, each candidate will develop a project proposal and training plan for external review. Approximately four candidates will be selected to participate in the one-year fellowship at each institution as CMB Global Health Leadership fellows.
