Modern medicine has made tremendous contributions to human life and health, with one of the core driving forces being innovation in medical technology and market competition. Recognizing the comprehensive value of new technologies and establishing effective and reasonable pricing mechanisms are key to promoting sustainable medical technology innovation.
The Institute for Global Health and Development at Peking University (GHD) and the China Association of Medical Equipment jointly launched a major public research project on May 19, 2023, titled "Survey of Medical Assessment for Robot Technology" (SMART). This project aims to track the clinical practice and development trends of medical robots through a nationwide real-world cohort survey and health technology assessment (HTA). The goal is to scientifically analyze the value of medical robots, promote value-based digital healthcare, and support the application of these technologies, contributing to the development goals of a “Healthy China” and a “Digital China.”
In November of the same year, to coordinate the advancement of the SMART cohort project, GHD launched a parallel research program with a one-year research term. Up to ten research proposals on the HTA of surgical robots are selected and funded annually.
GHD founded a bilingual internal publication, the SMART Surgical Quarterly, in 2024, to advance the SMART project cohort research and its parallel research activities and to facilitate academic exchanges among project team members and related experts from home and abroad. The first issue of the SMART Surgical Quarterly was officially released at the end of March 2024 and received widespread acclaim. This inaugural issue published the quarterly research updates from the main SMART project cohort and the parallel research teams. It also shared cutting-edge information on HTA of surgical robots and related health economic research from both domestic and international sources.

The SMART Surgical Quarterly is a platform for showcasing research results on surgical robots, sharing professional insights, and exchanging ideas with international peers. It aims to provide an open and inclusive academic exchange space for related scholars, promoting academic integration and continuous innovation and development in the field of health technology assessment for medical robots. The second issue of the SMART Surgical Quarterly is now accepting submissions and is expected to be officially released at the end of June 2024. We welcome contributions from colleagues in the surgical robot research community worldwide to promote the intelligent development of the surgical medicine field.
