Global Health Research and Postdoctoral Fellowships 2025 by Prof. Gordon G. Liu of Peking University Institute for Global Health and Development Professor Xu Anlong of Sun Yat-sen University Institute of Advanced Studies Hong Kong

Position: Research Fellowships available to support research fellows or postdoctoral fellows to participate in the leading global health research projects jointly led by Profs. Gordon G. Liu and Xu Anlong

Research Fields: Planetary Health Economics, Ecological Space Modeling, Health Econometrics, Health Digital Media Art

Dr. Gordon G. Liu: Peking University BOYA Distinguished Professor of Economics at Peking University (PKU) National School of Development, Dean of PKU Institute for Global Health and Development, and Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Medicine. Prof. Liu is the co-organizer for the “US-China Track II Dialogue on Health”, served on the State Council Health Reform Advisory Commission. He has served as associate editor for academic journals including China Economic Quarterly, Health Economics, and the Editor-in-Chief for China Journal of Pharmaceutical Economics. Prior to Peking University, he was on fulltime faculty at University of Southern California, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was the 2004-2005 President of Chinese Economists Society (CES), and the 2004-2006 President of ISPOR Asian Pacific Contortion.

Dr. Xu Anlong: Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, Director of Sun Yat-sen University Institute of Advanced Studies Hong Kong (IAS). Former Director of the National Key Laboratory of Harmful Biological Control and Resource Utilization, Director of the National Engineering Research Center for Marine Biotechnology in the South China Sea, Dean of the School of Life Sciences at Sun Yat-sen University, Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University, and President of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. Professor Xu's research focuses on the origin, evolution, function, and mechanisms of human immune defense diversity, as well as the prevention and treatment of immune-related diseases. His team has made groundbreaking and systematic contributions to this field. He has led 17 national-level research projects, including the National Outstanding Youth Fund, the 973 Program, the 863 Program, Key Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, and the National Key Research and Development Program.

The Peking University Institute for Global Health and Development (GHD) is a highly multidisciplinary institution that leverages the extensive faculty resources of both Peking University (PKU) main campus and the PKU health science centers. GHD brings together the university-wide experts from diverse fields such as public health, economics, social sciences, and environmental studies to address pressing global health challenges. GHD focuses on global health research from a cross-border perspective, exploring innovative solutions to major human health and development issues around the world. By fostering international partnerships and engaging in cutting-edge research, the institute aims to contribute to the advancement of human health and sustainable development on a global scale. GHD trains graduate students as future leaders in global health through a robust and interdisciplinary curriculum, gaining cutting-edge knowledge and expertise in health economics, global health diplomacy and governance, and natural health sciences.

The Sun Yat-sen University Institute of Advanced Studies Hong Kong (IAS) is the first comprehensive research institution established by a Mainland Chinese university in Hong Kong. Leveraging the strengths of Sun Yat-sen University and addressing the development demands of Hong Kong, IAS will focus on three key areas: Biomedical Science, Applied Mathematics, and Interdisciplinary Studies in Humanities and Social Science. Job Description:

To participate in the core research projects of global health in general, and planetary health in particular, led by Professors Gordon G. Liu and Xu Anlong.

Salary and Benefits:

A highly competitive fellowship package for at least two years, and possibly renewable upon work performance. Details can be discussed depending on the candidate’s qualifications, subject to the requirements of the two hosting institutions.

Position Qualifications:

1. Work locations include, but not limited to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, or Hong Kong.

2. Fulltime two-year commitment to research projects in planetary health as defined

3. For postdoc fellows, applicants should be under the age of 35, with a Ph.D. obtained within the last 3 years.

4. For research fellows, applicants may have PhD or master degree training.  

5. Academic background in health and development economics, environmental and spatial economics, applied econometrics, health big data and artificial intelligence, health technology assessment, or related fields.

6. Strong proficiency in modern statistics, data mining/machine learning theories and tools, and excellent modeling skills. Familiarity with UI interaction, complex data visualization, and digital media art skills is also preferred.

7. Outstanding written and spoken English.
